Smell and Taste

Now for the third organ: The mixed organ or Jacobson’s organ

This Jacobson’s organ can be classified as vomeronasal organ located in the mouth, it is the organ that also responds to chemical stimuli mixing taste and smell. This receptor is found at the end of the duct that that you see between the mouth and nose. The reaction of cats when they are capturing a sense is flehmen. The most common observation of this is in entire toms on the trail of an oestrous queen. Another time a cat observer may see this behavior is there reaction to catnip. In case you are wondering this organ was discovered by a scientist named Jacobson. Just a pointer here, remember the name Jacobson and flehmen, you will encounter these again.
