Smell and Taste

The importance of the organ of smell for cats can be explained by comparison: In humans, color plays an important part of how the world is perceived; for a cat, it is smell that fulfills this function. That is why cats smell and sniff any new object, cat or person before it is accepted. In the same way, only food that smells pleasingly to a cat will be eaten.

Before we proceed, what is the most important organ to help a cat understand its world? What are the organs that are part of smelling, sniffing and tasting? Yes, they are the olfactory mucosa (or organ), the tongue and the Jacobson’s organ.

This class will deal with the organ that smells. Other classes will follow that deal with the tongue and the Jacobson’s organ.
